Lionsgate has made a deal with Nu Image/Millennium Films to make a new series of movies based around the character Conan the Barbarian, created by Robert E. Howard, after the same joint venture bore the new Rambo film releasing Jan 25.
Variety Magazine reports that the team of Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, writers for Cowboys & Aliens will write the first film in the series. While the writers are prohibited from working during the strike, Nu/Millenium are in negotiations for an interim deal with the WGA. The hope is to start shooting in Bulgaria this late this summer.
Budget on the first film is set at $100 million. Expect to see it in theatres in late 2009 or early 2010.
