In addition to releasing this new trailer ahead of the July 22 premier of the film the producers at Paramount and CBS have adopted a term of reference for the "time-line" that started with the 2009 J.J. Abrams film.
There is the original time line that the 1966 tv series and all the other films and show shared including, Star Trek: Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. Then there is the splintered time-line where Spock and the Romulan ship Narada travel back through a black hole and in doing so destroy the USS Kelvin, captained by Kirk father. That time-line that includes Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond are the Kelvin Universe.
This will help distinguish the films from the new television series that is being developed for CBS All Access. the new series is rumored to be set in the original universe, but at an as-yet unknown time period.
